Driving Miss Daisy

9 May

As you may or may not know, women are not permitted to drive in Saudi Arabia (something about us having smaller brains or being too skittish, who knows) This is not generally a problem for me. You get used to it after a while and we make use of the compound busses and taxis. Incidentally, did you know that I am permitted to use any male taxi driver but may not be caught in a vehicle with my neighbour as I am not married to him and he is not a driver. Who knows what we could get up to while he is trying to navigate the wild roads of Riyadh, duh!  Anyway, back to the story…

One of the Kiwi moms who live in our compound was out with her three little kids recently. She had taken them to an amusement park located in one of the shopping malls. Her son of 4 decided that he wanted to ride in a bumper car. As he is still quite young he was apprehensive about driving the bumper car on his own and was scared about being bashed by other kids so he asked his mom to drive the little car and he would sit next to her.

As she was about to get into the bumper car, the person operating the ride stopped her and told her that she was not permitted to do so as….wait for it…

WOMEN ARE NOT PERMITTED TO DRIVE IN SAUDI ARABIA!

Thinking that this chap was an absolute idiot as it was just an amusement park ride she summoned management over who did indeed confirm that they could not allow her to drive her little son around as…

WOMEN ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE IN SAUDI ARABIA!

    Hi Philippa!

Thank you for your blogs and for giving us an idea about how it is living in Saudi, especially in Riyadh. I plan to go there and it’s nice to know the culture before I even step foot there in the Land of Sand. I am fairly new here on wordpress, so I would know how to “follow” your blogs or even get updates to your new post…

But anyways, hope to read more from your website soon!!!

Mashallah, you have a very nice site.
