A Birthday with a Twist

2 Aug

Finally I have some time to make a rare appearance on my little ‘ol blog. Oh my word, have we been busy in the Land of Sand! And to be honest I have needed a few days to recover after only 7 and a half hours sleep over the weekend. All self-induced, mind you, no need for sympathy but if I could only get Luka to sleep past 5:30 am busy weekends would be a lot easier. But it is what it is and I know that when he is a teenager I will complain because I can’t get him out of bed in the mornings!

So with Olaf(father of the early riser)’s birthday looming we decided to have a few friends over for a BBQ to celebrate. A few being 25 of our nearest and dearest. And just to throw a spanner in the works we added the fact that it would also be a “Suitcase Party”. In our world a Suitcase Party starts off looking like a normal party, something like this…

What the photo neglects to portray is the interesting array of plastic shopping bags(suitcases) lined up against the wall. You see, every guest was instructed to arrive with a fancy dress costume in a packet. A costume for this party could range from a ready-made outfit to a bag containing black trash bags and sellotape, we weren’t fussy and we strongly encouraged creativity. The twist in our suitcase parties is this…you don’t get to wear what you have brought along. You get someone else’s suitcase and have to then wear what ever you get.

In order to help build up our guests courage, our friend Madele and I, had already chosen a little yellow number for the birthday boy. As he was the head organiser of the bag swapping, we felt that it would only be fair. The fair Olaf was presented to the group by another fabulous but completely loopy friend, Connor, who as always had bucked the trend and arrived during dinner already dressed in his girlfriends carefully chosen sleepwear.

Once we  had the opportunity to feast our eyes on the birthday boy we all got to draw a number from a hat(so to speak).

And get dressed up…

Despite some apprehension and loads of questions on delivery of the invitations, we could not have wished for a more creative or enthusiastic bunch of people to spend the evening with.

And a very happy birthday Mr B!
