France – Day 3

14 Sep

Today we:

  • visited the walled city of Avignon. This graceful city is circled by a 4.3km wall and is considered to be the belle of Provence’s ball. It was built in the 14th century but even then was not considered very state-of-the-art as it lacked machicolations(openings in the parapets for pouring boiling oil on attackers or for shooting out arrows).

  •   found a gap in said wall and snuck in.

  • strolled though the narrow streets.

  • popped our heads into the churches and marvelled at the light pouring in through the windows.

  • posed for the camera

  • visited the Palais des Papes (papal palace). Avignon was the papal seat of power during the 14th century and this is the largest Gothic palace in Europe.

  • saw elephants balancing on their trunks (not sure about the 50-cent crotch grabbing pose).

      Hi Brigitte

It is certainly beautiful, all lush, green and very pretty. It is not always that calm though, some places are quite busy even though the French holidays are mostly over. We try to vary the activities so that we have a busy day followed by a slightly quieter one.

      Hi Mom
It is beautiful and there is so much to see. We are traveling alot everyday and covering much of Provence. Am feeling a little exhausted today as Luka woke up at 5:30 and we have been on the go all day but we have to get out and about while we can.

      Dareen!

How lovely to hear from you.
We are having a great time but are absolutely exhausted tonight. Tomorrow may need to be a rest day lest we reach burnout before we reach Paris!
Lots of love from us all
